Many women may be surprised to learn that the cosmetics they use may contain mercury. Even though in the United States it is illegal to use mercury in cosmetics, it is not in many other countries. And, products containing mercury are often illegally imported into the U.S. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, skin-whitening products sometime contain high levels of mercury.
These lotions are popular among women of Asian descent. And, many women who have in the past used these lotions now suffer from mercury poisoning. In 2002 researchers in Hong Kong found that two well-liked skin whitening products contained between 9,000 to 60,000 times the recommended doses of mercury.
