Author: mom_to_one, 02 17th, 2011

When your child is diagnosed with autism, don’t fret. It’s normal that you may not know what to do or where to turn to find help and answers. You may have questions like: Will my child need to see a specialist? Are there any medications available to help? What may have caused this condition?

One of the first things you should do to help your autistic child is to sign them up for Applied Behavior Analysis, which is a common form of autism therapy. This will allow doctors to study your child’s social, motor and verbal behaviors as well as reasoning skills. While children without autism learn these skills and behaviors naturally through their own environment, children with autism need guidance in learning them. Once you are familiar with the ABA method, you can practice it at home with your child.

Many parents remain unaware of the prevalence of autism in young children these days. In fact, the Center of Disease Control reports that 1 out of 110 children is diagnosed with autism, which makes this condition much more common than childhood cancers, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis combined.

As a parent it’s important to learn about autism before having children so you’ll know what to expect or look for incase your child turns out to be autistic. The sooner your child is diagnosed and receives analysis by a physician specializing in autism, the more can be done to help your child lead a normal life. Autism education is an important lesson for us all; the more we spread the word the more support we’ll have to fuel our cause.

Probiotics are considered to be the ‘good bacteria’ to exist within the human body. More scientifically put, they are live microorganisms that can provide to be a beneficial host to the human body when administered in adequate doses. Some common examples of these probiotics are lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bifidbacteria.

Many studies have been performed to correlate the benefits of probiotics to treatments for autism. According to one study, there is a link between certain bacteria in the human gut and autism, which gives a new hope to countless families worldwide. We can only hope that the future continues to bring good news with further research for people with autism everywhere.

Last Wednesday, the Virginia House passed legislation that would change history as we know it. The 11-year struggle to impose autism-related treatment coverage under certain healthcare plans has finally seen its victory day. With a 74-24 vote, the bill presented a landslide win, causing parents of children with autism to rejoice statewide.

Now, families can bask in the comfort of knowing that their children would now receive adequate care and coverage for autism-related treatments at an affordable price. The new autism information mandate will require companies that employ more than 50 people to provide such care to their employees. Annual benefits for behavioral analysis cover up to $35,000 for these families. Finally, parents of children with autism will receive a much-deserved financial break.

Look Before You Leap into Autism ‘Cures’

It can be devastating to hear that your child has been diagnosed with autism. However, an autistic child holds the same capacity to love you and bring the utmost joy to your life just like any other child. So, before you dive into a supposed cure or treatment for your autistic child, you should do your homework because some ‘solutions’ have long-term effects that are less than desirable.

Have you ever heard of chelation? This supplemental therapy expels mercury from the body and many parents of autistic children view autism to have been caused by mercury within childhood vaccines. However, the truth is that there is no scientific cure for autism and chelation therapy can pose the risk of a severely damaged liver or kidneys in the long run. Therefore, it’s best to research any and all autism treatments before exposing your child to any potentially harmful ‘cures.’

Founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, Autism Speaks was developed as an autism science and advocacy organization. Today, the program had emerged into the nation’s largest program of its kind. And to think it only took the belief and strength of two people, the grandparents of one autistic child, to bring this noble organization to life.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to funding research for the exploration of prevention, causes, treatments, and cure for autism. Secondly, the organization strives to promote increasing autism awareness and the spectrum of disorders to a child’s behavior and cognitive capabilities it can bring. The Wrights are also determined to unite the autism community as a powerful voice among government and health officials to promote change within the treatment of autism.
