Parental Causes Of Autism
, 02 28th, 2013
Generally, it is believed by scientists that autism is more likely caused by prenatal factors; comparatively, it is very controversial and unproven that any postnatal factors result in autism. For instance, diabetes in the mother during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk factor for autism.
Other factors that have been associated as causes of autism or, at the very least, factors that might contribute towards a child being born with autism include advanced age of the mother or father, certain environmental agents that can cause birth defects, as well as exposure to certain infections. Thus far, there have been no studies that have confirmed that there are any postnatal contributors to autism.
No More Tuna Fish
, 07 31st, 2012
Betsy, a neighbor of mine, is pregnant with her first child. As is expected, she is both nervous and exciting about becoming a parent for the first time. I have three little ones of my own, so Betsy asked me some questions about pregnancy, particularly about diet.
I pointed her to a website that gives expectant mothers great advice on how to get all their nutrients in each day. I also tipped her off about not eating tuna fish during pregnancy because of the high levels of mercury. The effects of mercury poisoning on a fetus can be devastating, so I recommended she try sardines if she really need a fish fix.
Surprising Sources of Lead Exposure
, 07 24th, 2012
In the past few years there have been lead scares throughout the U.S. Lead poisoning is particularly dangerous for young children because even with treatment, lead poisoning can permanently stunt a child’s development. Even with precautions put in place, you may still be unknowingly exposing your child to dust.
For instance, homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint, which can chip off and lead to lead dust that would be easy for children and adults to ingest simply by breathing. If your home was built before the lead paint ban, then you should have your home tested by a professional. If the tests come back positive, then have your children tested for lead poisoning and ask your pediatrician about chelation.
Avoiding Environmental Risks
, 07 12th, 2012
Carrying a pregnancy to term can be an overwhelming experience. It seems that every day there are new guidelines published as to what pregnant women should and should not eat; activities that are encouraged or to be avoided. It can be difficult to know what is right and what is wrong.
One area the scientific community is starting to rally around is the need for pregnant women to avoid certain environmental risks. For instance, to lower the risks of birth defects mercury poisoning women are advised to limit the amount of fish they eat while pregnant, with tuna fish being a big no-no. Pesticides are to be avoided, too, as there is some evidence that pesticides can lead to low birth weight. Organic foods can be expensive, but eating right is well worth the extra money.
Chelation Therapy for Autism
, 05 03rd, 2012
The build up of heavy toxins in the body is thought by some to be a contributing factor in autism and mental retardation. To alleviate some of the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning, you can try chelation therapy. The therapy can be completed using pills or gel applied to the skin.
The active ingredients in chelation therapy pull arsenic and other toxins out of the body. Before performing chelation, it is important to seek the advice of a medical professional. Especially when it comes to autistic children, you want to be sure that the chelation therapy is not harming other aspects of their health and well-being
Prepping for Chelation
, 05 01st, 2012
Chelation therapy can assist in removing heavy metal toxins from your system. Some people believe that by removing these toxins symptoms of autism can be relieved. Before you attempt chelation therapy there is some prep work that needs to be done.
For starters, research the different types of chelation therapy. You’ll also want to consult a medical professional who has familiarity with chelation therapy. A full medical work up should be taken prior to chelation in order to flag any health concerns that may be exacerbated by the procedure.
Chelation Therapy and Autism
, 05 05th, 2011
Chelation became well known during the 1950’s when it was proposed as a method to cleanse the blood vessel walls of toxins and minerals. It was originally used to treat heavy metal poisoning. As of today, there are different ways that chelation is being used.
Some people with Autistic children believe that Chelation therapy is an option. Due to the belief that autism is caused by to much mercury exposure, some believe that chelation will help in the treatment of autism. As with anything, there are pros and cons. This is especially true when it comes to anything medically related. Before you decide on any type of medication or therapy you will want to discuss it with your doctor.
What is Chelation?
, 04 19th, 2011
Chelation is the formation or presence of two or more separate bindings between a polydentate ligand and a single central atom. So what exactly does that tell us in more comprehendible terms? The chelate effect says that one who undergoes this process of the body will experience an enhanced affinity of chelating ligands for a metal ion compared to the affinity of a collection of similar nonchelating ligands for the same metal.
Well, I guess it turns out there is not an easy way to describe or define chelation. But let’s take a look at chelation therapy for a little more insight. This is described as the delivery of chelation agents to remove heavy metals from the body and this process is most commonly used to remove lead, arsenic or mercury from the body.
Look Before You Leap into Autism ‘Cures’
, 02 03rd, 2011
It can be devastating to hear that your child has been diagnosed with autism. However, an autistic child holds the same capacity to love you and bring the utmost joy to your life just like any other child. So, before you dive into a supposed cure or treatment for your autistic child, you should do your homework because some ‘solutions’ have long-term effects that are less than desirable.
Have you ever heard of chelation? This supplemental therapy expels mercury from the body and many parents of autistic children view autism to have been caused by mercury within childhood vaccines. However, the truth is that there is no scientific cure for autism and chelation therapy can pose the risk of a severely damaged liver or kidneys in the long run. Therefore, it’s best to research any and all autism treatments before exposing your child to any potentially harmful ‘cures.’
Removing Heavy Metals
, 12 01st, 2010
It is often said that mercury poisoning is among the leading causes of autism. As the debate on the subject continues there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence that supports the claims by some parents that removing heavy metals from the body can improve the symptoms of autism. The medical community seems to be divided right down the middle on the subject with both sides citing organized studies to support their claims.
Some sources claim that anywhere between 2%-8% of all autistic children have been treated with chelation therapy. Rates of success or improvement, however, remain unknown. Despite the evidence on both sides, parents of autistic children may want to investigate this treatment as its dangers appear to be minimal to non-existent. There are several avenues parents can take if they choose to try chelation with comprehensive supplements being the most popular.
